March 2007 American Club meeting
“Women in Business”

On Thursday evening, March 29, about 100 gathered for the March meeting of the American Club of Asmara.  With March as “Women’s Month,” the meeting focused on women in business.  Three women with distinctive business backgrounds spoke to this avid audience at the Eritro-German auditorium.

The March 29th session featured the three dynamic speakers:  Ms. Tsehaitu Daniel, Eritrean Chamber of Commerce; Ms. Ghennet Bokretzion, Double Harvest Poultry Farm; and Ms. Darlene Hartman, OMS U.S. Embassy.  As head of the Women in Business Development Unit at the Chamber of Commerce, Ms. Tsehaitu Daniel provided a stellar overview of the status of women in business, the disparities that exist in gender for businesses, and the trends needed to provide better greater opportunities for women in business.  Ms. Ghennet Bokretzion, owner and manager of her own poultry business, spoke about the resourcefulness required to keep businesses vital and the adaptability needed in the face of such obstacles as bird flu.  Ms. Darlene Hartman, previous business owner and marketing expert, shared her insights from seeing a nascent coffee business develop into Starbucks.  All presenters kept the audience at rapt attention, and the ensuing discussion showed an awareness of women’s strong financial trustworthiness and diligence in business.

The Eritro-German center auditorium held the preliminary art work received for the children’s art competition for International Earth Day.  In addition, the audience was able to peruse new holdings from the American Center library.
