YOUTH ART WORKSHOP: ASMARA, OUR CITY
Charge d’Affaires Holly Holzer discussed with students their images of Asmara at the end of their two-day arts workshop, on August 15. The U.S. Embassy sponsored a two-day arts workshop, titled “Asmara, Our City”, for children ages 8-10, at the Eritro-German auditorium. A diverse group of fifty children from throughout Asmara participated in the workshop and using “found objects” to create art.
The Public Affairs section of the U.S. Embassy sponsored the event, offering Eritrean youth a glimpse of cities in America and Eritrea. The youth then created and presented their own images of Asmara. During the session, several well-known artists and educators led the workshop and demonstrated use of drawing materials and collage, an art form in which found objects of discarded papers, magazines and packaging materials are recycled into art materials. Students created their works in teams and individually. Through an exchange with a school in the U.S. the images created by the youth in the workshop in Asmara will be shared with youth in the U.S. Group collages and drawings are currently on display at the Eritro-German auditorium, near the American Center. Many thanks to the Government of the State of Eritrea's Ministry of Education for their supprot for this program.
The workshop ended with certificates presented to each participant, followed by a children’s film show. The U.S Embassy shows children’s films Wednesday afternoons at 4:00 pm, with a showing to a general audience at 6:15. All are welcome! Please Click Here to see the title of our films.
