"Cyber crime" discussed at American Club
Public Affairs Office hosted its monthly American Club lecture at Eritro- German conference hall on January 31, 2008 on “Cyber crime,” by Mr. Daniel Ferede, UNMEE.
Mr. Daniel began his speech by explaining the meaning of cyber crime, the identity of cyber criminals, and ways of committing cyber crime. He also explained means of countering cyber crime.
Cyber crime is an unauthorized use, or attempt to stop or bypass the security mechanisms, of an information system or network. Mr. Daniel Ferede explained that cyber crime could be conducted by individuals or their organizations. He also said that cyber criminals could also be children as young as age 6-18 who are very curious to know or explore things. Sometimes, they are also children who want to prove their computer skills among other children. Some cyber criminals are professionally organized. Mr. Daniel said that, even though technical experts and administrators try to protect against this crime, nobody can be 100 percent secure. The only thing to do is to minimize the risk of being attacked by a cyber criminal.
Following his dynamic presentation, Mr. Daniel took many questions from the well-informed audience. With such strong interest in this topic, the American Center hopes to arrange a workshop on this topic in the near future. Those interested may call 114011 or 120637.
