POST SPECIFIC INSERTS FOR DV APPOINTMENT FLYER

Please be aware that your selection as a Diversity Visa (DV) winner does not guarantee that you will receive a visa. At the time of your interview, a Consular Officer will determine if you meet the qualifications for the DV under the laws of the United States, and are eligible for the visa.

The applicant must have a passport in order to schedule the interview and apply for the DV at the Consular section at the US Embassy in Asmara.  Spouse and children who wish to accompany the applicant to the U.S. must also have passports. Young children may be included in their parent’s passport.

The DV applicant must have the equivalent of twelve years of education at a minimum. In Eritrea (and for Eritreans who studied in Ethiopia), this is:

*Having passed the matriculation exam with a minimum of 5 D grades.

If the DV applicant has not passed the matriculation exam, they must have work experience in an occupation identified by the U.S. Department of Labor. Most of these kinds of jobs require the equivalent of a U.S. university degree. Few people qualify for the DV based on their work experience.

If you do not have any of these qualifications, you WILL NOT qualify for the DV and should not proceed with your DV application.

You must pay a non-refundable fee of US$755.00 to apply. If you do not qualify for the visa, this money will not be returned to you. You may pay in Nakfa or in dollars.

The Embassy may disqualify you at the time of your visa interview, if you failed to include the biographic details of your spouse and children in your original DV entry.

You must also have the financial resources to support your visa application. Please bring in all documentary evidence such as property ownership, bank statements, affidavit of support and other relevant documents.  You must convince the Consular Officer at the time of your interview that the financial resources you have shown can legally be converted into U.S. Dollars and transferred to the United States. Living in the United States is very expensive, and you must be able to show that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself and your family in the United States to qualify for the visa.

If you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the visa, you WILL NOT receive a visa. Please do not waste your time and money if you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the visa.

Please do NOT attempt to submit fraudulent documents with your visa application. By doing so, you will be refused a visa and risk being permanently ineligible for any type of visa to the United States in the future. Furthermore, you may be turned over to the police who may take legal action against you.

For DV2009, interviews and visas will be scheduled between October 1, 2008 and September 30, 2009. You must have your interview and qualify for the visa prior to September 30, 2009. After this date, the Consular Section can not issue DV2009 visas.

For DV questions, please contact the Consular Section at telephone 12-00-04 from Monday to Thursday between 2pm and 6pm with your specific questions on visa application procedures. The Consular staff would be happy to answer your questions.
