Ambassador DeLisi, along with several young admirers, congratulates a new graduate of the St. Lucy Filippini’s six-month sewing course.

Ambassador Scott DeLisi distributed diplomas and congratulations on December 30, 2006 to the graduates of the St. Lucy Filippini School of Home Economics six-month sewing course.  During his remarks, the Ambassador lauded the lady graduates for their desire to continue their learning and self-improvement and their dedication and persistence in reaching their goal – qualities highly valued in American as well as in Eritrean society.

St. Lucy Filippini Home Economics School has been operating for 12 years in Asmara.   The school’s programs focus on empowering women, and they target widows, single mothers, and destitute women, particularly those trying to support families.  The school offers several programs: a two-year course to include training in sewing, home management, hygiene, health education, childcare, cooking, and English language skills, as well as shorter six month certificate courses in areas of home management and sewing/embroidery.  About 80% of all graduates have obtained employment after completion of these courses.  Since the school opened, almost 500 women have received training.

Persons interested in learning more about these programs can contact the Sisters at St. Lucy Filippini at the following e-mail address:  religious@tse.com.er
