Hassaan Ali Workshop Encourages Young Artists

Young artists at The Gallery

With support from the Embassy of the United States and the British Council, award-winning Sudanese artist Hassaan Ali conducted a painting workshop for young Asmara artists at the Odeon Theater.  The event was organized by the Peace Building Centre for the Horn of Africa.

American Charge Jennifer McIntyre and Public Affairs Officer Margery Benson visited with the young artists, March 2, and observed their visual compositions on the theme of dislocation.  The group of approximately fifteen youth displayed a wide variety of techniques and approaches to this subject matter.  Many worked in acrylic paint, with various textures and compositions. These works of art are to be exhibited at The Gallery, Asmara starting March 3. 

Ali, recent award winner at the Cairo Biennale, just completed an exhibition at The Gallery, Asmara, on the same theme. While his works are untitled, the show was titled “Dislocation (2).”  This workshop was a direct outgrowth of his exhibition and has served to encourage artistic expression among young Eritreans.
