The Public Affairs Staff from U.S. Embassy Asmara, in partnership with BIDHO and NUEYS, held an HIV/Aids fair on June 17, at the Eritro-German auditorium. BIDHO is an Eritrean NGO that supports People living with HIV/AIDS. NUEYS is the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students.
The program opened with remarks from Ambassador Ronald K. McMullen, U.S. Ambassador to Eritrea. After opening remarks, the audience heard personal testimony from a BIDHO member. The speaker was able to inform the audience about the importance of testing and treatment. He also provided personal insight regarding his health and family. BIDHO also showed a short video about HIV/AIDS and combating the stigma.
NUEYS captivated the audience with an energetic HIP-HOP show. NUEYS wrote, choreographed, and sung several songs about HIV and healthy living. NUEYS also performed a poignant drama about HIV/AIDS in Eritrea. In an entertaining way, the actors relayed the message of transmission, testing and stigma.
After the formal program, several tables were ready for questions and referrals. Over 300 participants came to this event. Most of the participants were youth in high school, youth workers, and youth living with HIV/Aids.
