"The History of Nursing in Eritrea" was the May 29 topic for the monthly American Club meeting. Speaking to over 90 people in the audience, Nurse Ghidey Kifle, an experienced nurse and trainer at Asmara’s School of Nursing, began her lecture with a short overview of the history of nursing globally dating back to 5000 B.C., through the genesis of modern-day nursing pioneered by Florence Nightingale, and then, focused on the history of nursing in Eritrea.
Nurse Ghidey explained that Asmara’s Nursing School was opened by “Point Four,” an American Mission, in 1955. Since that time, the school has trained more than 3,000 female and male nurses. Nurse Ghidey provided an excellent lecture and participants engaged in a lively question-and-answer session on issues such as comparing the past and present day trends in nursing, customer service in Eritrea’s health field, and how to interest youth in pursing health careers.
The American Club's next lecture will be held on Thursday, June 26, featuring Dr. Tesfamariam Yoseph on the topic "Resources from the Red Sea."
