Ambassador
The Ambassador's Special Self-Help Program
The Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Program (SSHP) of the United States Embassy in Eritrea funds small-scale activities that promote self-reliance and foster development. The Ambassador’s Self-Help Funds non-governmental organizations, schools, community groups, health and environmental associations. The goal is to improve basic environmental, economic, social, and quality of life conditions in the communities. With the SSHP support, communities build bridges and latrines, dig wells to provide water, expand health clinics, teach income generating skills, and undertake different activities that improve living conditions or increase income.
Projects should be initiated by the community, should be manageable within the means of the community, should be completed within one year of signing the agreement, benefit the greatest number of people possible, have a substantial community contribution in the form of cash, labor or materials and should be sustainable once the US funds have been spent.
The grants, ranging from US$1,000 to US$20,000, supplement the groups’ own contributions of money, material and time.
