On March 7, Ambassador McMullen distributed 80 sewing manuals at the Asmara Cathedral to women participating in the Daughters of St. Anne’s two-year home economics school. The Daughters of St. Anne run multiple sewing schools in fifteen cities throughout Eritrea to assist underprivileged women in gaining valuable skills which can be used at home or for small commercial enterprise. The U.S. Embassy funded a total of 2,000 manuals, which were designed and printed by the Daughters of St. Anne, to provide sewing instructions to women through means of pictures in order to eliminate language barriers in understanding written instructions. 600 manuals will be distributed to the Daughters of St. Anne’s sewing schools throughout Eritrea in 2008. The remaining manuals will be provided to new classes in upcoming years.
