| Graduates of the St. Lucy Filippini’s school |
On June 30, 2007 Chargé d’Affaires, Jennifer A. McIntyre was invited to make remarks and assist in distributing diplomas and congratulations to graduates of the St. Lucy Filippini School of Home Economics six-month certificate and two-year diploma sewing courses. During her remarks, the Chargé lauded the lady graduates for their desire to continue their learning and self-improvement and their dedication and persistence in reaching their goal – qualities highly valued in American as well as in Eritrean society. She also congratulated the St. Lucy Fillipini home economics school on the success of their program to assist these deserving women of Eritrea.
St. Lucy Filippini Home Economics School has been operating for 12 years in Asmara and is funded by Gruppo Missioni Asmara (GMA). The school’s programs focus on empowering women, and they target widows, single mothers, and destitute women, particularly those trying to support families. The school offers several programs: a two-year course to include training in sewing, home management, hygiene, health education, childcare, cooking, and English language skills, as well as shorter six month certificate courses in areas of home management and sewing/embroidery. About 80% of all graduates have obtained employment after completion of these courses. Since the school opened, almost 500 women have received training.
