A large water project funded by the U.S. Government’s Agency for International Development (USAID/OFDA) was inaugurated by Ms. Salma Hasen, Governor of Anseba Region on July 26, 2007. The "Eden Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project" was recently completed with the support of the UN’s Children Fund (UNICEF) at a cost exceeding US$ 500,000. The two-year project required the construction of: two boreholes fitted with submersible pumps in the Terenkua Dam; nine kilometers of transmission and distribution pipelines; two masonry reservoirs holding 150 m³ and 35 m³ in water storage capacity; and eighteen public fountains which will distribute clean water to users and includes a supply line to the school and heath centers.  Project implementation also included purchase and installation of a 50 KVA diesel generator and a generator house and construction of 500 household latrines.

As the result of the WASH project, 8,536 residents of Eden Town and Terenkua village will now be able to easily access a safe and adequate water supply.  312 students and teaching staff will benefit from having close access to water on their school compound, as well as several health centers.  The young girls and women of the community will benefit greatly as they will no longer have to travel several kilometers each day to fetch water.  With water readily available, children and indeed the whole community will benefit from improved cleanliness and overall hygiene.
